I had a painting question posed to me today … what can you do with dated brass lamps to make them 1) updated 2) look like they match and 3) not brass?

Well, I thought about it and these are my three suggestions:

1) Paint the brass metal with a paint designed for metal. I’d go with a RustOleum product. They come in a variety of colors and are meant to be used on metal.

2) Patina them. I love the look of patina. So much so I even wrote about it in a previous post. There’s lots of info on the Web about how to oxidize brass, but I found this site to be pretty straight forward and EASY.

3) Cover them with fabric. This is a little out there, but if you’re going for an ecclectic look, you could create a fabric pouch to sit your lamp inside. Just cut a circle of fabric large enought to come up to the top of the base of the lamp. Gather the fabric at the top and tie in place with a coordinating decorative rope. Add a tassel or beading for more flair.

After the primer was set, they chose a bright berry colored spray paint and went to town. I thought it turned out really nicely and you can make it to coordinate with any decor!

After my last post, I started researching the product a little more and found a plethora of projects and information. What great ideas! It seems you can cover just about anything with chalkboard paint and you can even make your own.

I found this really cool idea from Simply Green (scroll down to the October 13, 2006 entry).

And, then I found this great idea from Real Simple.

Have you painted anything crazy with chalkboard paint? Let me know!

I visited a quaint little cake shoppe in my town last week and fell in love with the decor. It’s very European with eclectic decor all around. But, what really caught my eye was the trim technique that had been placed around the top of the room. The owners of the cafe had taken two small molding pieces and placed them about six inches apart, creating a crown molding effect around the room.

They then, took chalkboard paint and painted the bare wall in between the two pieces and then took colorful chalks and drew in the appropriate text and pictures to go with the shop. On their walls they wrote their specialty cakes and drew the cutest pictures of their interpretation of the cakes.

I thought to myself, what a fabulous idea. But, for me, I want to use it in the kitchen as a chair rail. I think using coordinating chalks and writing in various things to match the decor would be great. Or, if you have children, let them write in little messages. It would bring a definite “down-home” feel to any space.

Also, what about in a music room? I could just see little measures of music dancing around the room. You could also use it in a library or other room.

I wish I had a picture to illustrate, but I didn’t think to snap one while I waited in line. I did however find this product that you can use to create the chalkboard trim.
